# How to wash a comforter or duvet at a laundromat.

Answer-first: use the 30-lb front-load washer ($7), then run the dryer long enough that the fill is fully dry — not just the shell. Or drop it with our counter as wash & fold.

3. How to wash a comforter

Answer Use our **30-lb front-load washer** ($7 per cycle), then dryer time long enough to fully cure the fill. Most king comforters need two dryer cycles. Prefer to skip it? Drop it as [wash & fold](/comforters-and-bedding).

## Why home machines struggle with comforters

Standard household washers and dryers are built for clothes, not bedding. Cramming a king comforter into a home top-loader traps the fill in one lump, prevents even soaking, and often leaves the machine unbalanced. Home dryers are usually too small to tumble a king comforter freely, so the outside dries while the fill inside stays damp — the fast way to get mildew.

## Which machine should I use?

Our **30-lb front-load washers** ($7 per cycle) fit king comforters, duvets, and heavy blankets with room to tumble. Front-loaders don't have a center agitator, so the fill doesn't get bunched up.

- Twin/full comforter — the 20-lb eco front-load ($6) is usually enough.
- Queen/king comforter or duvet — use the 30-lb front-load ($7).
- Sleeping bag, heavy blanket, mattress pad — 30-lb front-load ($7).

## What settings should I pick?

Follow the care label on the item. When in doubt, go warm/cold with a normal or bulky cycle. If your care label calls for cold-only, respect that — some fills and shells can shrink or bleed in warm water. Use less detergent than you'd think: bedding rinses cleaner with a smaller dose and a full rinse cycle.

## How long should I dry it?

Dryers are **$1 per 16 minutes**. Most king comforters need **two full cycles** — sometimes three if the fill is heavy down. Pause halfway to shake out and redistribute the fill, then keep going until the item is fully dry to the touch _and_ weightless when you hold it up. Damp fill is the number-one cause of post-wash odor.

## Should I do it myself or drop it off?

Both work. Doing it yourself is cheaper — one washer cycle and a couple of dryer cycles. Dropping it as wash & fold means you hand off the shift-and-redistribute step; we handle the timing and text you when it's done. See our [comforters & bedding page](/comforters-and-bedding) for details.

## What we don't offer

To be upfront: we're a laundromat, not a dry cleaner. We don't offer dry cleaning, stain treatment, or specialty restoration. If your comforter's care label says _dry clean only_, take it to a dry cleaner instead — washing it will damage the fill or shell.

## Ready to bring it in?

We're open every day, 6am–9pm, at 3376 25th St in the Mission. For more small tips, read [laundromat tips: get in and out faster](/guides/laundromat-tips).
